Boss Key Productions’ Cliff Bleszinski has strong ties to virtual reality (VR) technology, despite never developing for it. At his former post at Epic Games the developer was one of the first to invest in Oculus VR and the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), and has spoken about his love for the technology on many occasions. Now with his new team Bleszinksi is developing a new title, codenamed Bluestreak. It doesn’t look this first-person shooter (FPS) will be for VR, but Bleszinski certainly sees the technology in the company’s future.
The developer said as much speaking on Gamespot and Kinda Funny Games‘ E3 coverage today. “So the thing is, we’re building this game, we’re establishing it, but long term I want to take a really good long look at VR.”
He then went on to talk about his experience seeing Valve and HTC’s Vive HMD at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) last march. “So, when we were at GDC the Vive just completely blew my brain. It was absolutely a religious experience. The latest Oculus stuff? It’s on that level. It’s pretty magical. When you look down, you actually see your hands and then you see somebody standing across from you it’s pretty impressive stuff.”
Elsewhere, Bleszinski talked about the commercial potential of VR, noting that he believed all the technology needed was kiosks in retail outlets to sell units. He also joked that, in his opinion, there are two types of people: those that haven’t seen VR for themselves and doubt it and those that are believers in the technology. He didn’t provide any clue as to when a VR title from the studio might be revealed.
VRFocus will continue to follow Boss Key Studios’ work in VR, reporting back with the latest updates on it.
