Multiplayer is an intriguing concept for virtual reality (VR), and something that’s being explored in a number of entries into Oculus VR’s Mobile VR Jam. Triangular Pixels has reached the finals of the competition with its two-player title, Double Destruction. Another developer to reach these last stages with a multiplayer title is Marc Hansen with his submission, Polo.
In Polo, one player puts on the Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) and plays as a mouse named Polo. Their objective is to eat six pieces of cheese hidden around one of three maps. As they scour the levels they will be hunted by Marco, a cat that is either controlled by another player on an Android device or by AI. Marco is simply tasked with catching Polo. A number of objects and obstacles are laid throughout the map.
A video of Polo can be seen below. Those with a Gear VR can also download the build submitted to the VR Jam through an official entry page.
As one of the finalists in the videogame track of the Mobile VR Jam, Polo hopes to secure a grand prize of $200,000 USD. There are also a range of runner-up prizes on offer including $100,000, $50,000, and $10,000. Winners are currently being judged by a panel that includes the likes of Oculus VR’s Palmer Luckey and John Carmack, and will be announced in early June 2015. A community voted award of $10,000 is also on offer.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all entries into the VR Jam, reporting back with the latest on them.
