Whilst many VR Jam titles we’ve featured so far compromise a mix of fun puzzles, co-op gameplay and often bright colours there haven been very few, if any, shown so far that you could class as particularly dark. However virtual reality (VR) is by its very nature immersive and atmospheric and it is these factors the developers of In A Darkened Room are trying to accentuate with their entry.
The experience takes places in the eponymous location, whereupon you are questioned by a mysterious voice. The character you play has is believed to have committed a number of crimes. Evidence is apparently not enough to convict you alone and so you are subjugated to a barrage of questions, the answers to which could easily result in your execution. Narwhal Catch Donut this is not. The title itself is a potential reference to a song of the same name by American heavy metal band Skid Row, which features some very dark themes indeed.
Part of the videogame bracket of Oculus VR’s Mobile VR Jam, In A Darkened Room requires inputs through a keyboard to answer the interrogator’s questions. The videogame is developed by Q.U.B.E. (Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion) creators Dan Da Rocha and Jon Savery.
A $200,000 USD top prize is on offer for the winner of the Game Jam, with additional monetary prizes also available.
