Virtual reality (VR) is yet to see many household names in terms of developers, but E McNeill can probably be counted among them. Last year saw the creator release his anticipated VR hacking title, Darknet, for free on the Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD), making it one of the few full titles on the platform ahead of the launch of a commercial store. Darknet is also on the way to the Oculus Rift, but McNeill has recently been working on another Gear VR project in Tactera, his entry into Oculus VR’s Mobile VR Jam.
A video showcasing gameplay from Tactera can be seen below. The developer describes the title a tabletop real-time strategy experience designed for VR. Players find themselves in a command centre and are given command over units such as tanks, bombers and gunships which they must use to defeat enemy armies. The title doesn’t require an additional Bluetooth controller, instead relying on the Gear VR’s touchpad for control. Those interested in the experience can download its final build from an official entry page.
All developers still in the running for the Mobile VR Jam have now submitted the final builds of their entries to Oculus VR for judging. Those in the videogame track of the competition are hoping to secure the grand prize of $200,000 USD or at least one of the runner-up prizes of $100,000, $50,000, and $10,000. A community-voted prize of $10,000 is also on offer, with winners of both this and the judge’s selection to be announced in early June 2015. Judges include the likes of Oculus VR’s Palmer Luckey and John Carmack.
VRFocus will continue to follow the Mobile VR Jam closely, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
