VR Arcade Shooter V.E.C.T. Hits Greenlight, Demo Available

With Oculus VR recently attaching a Q1 2016 release window to the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), developers have a clear timeframe to shoot for with the release of their titles. You can expect to see plenty more VR-related Steam Greenlight campaigns launching ahead of that window, then. In fact, the first such title has already been revealed in V.E.C.T., a new arcade shooter that’s hoping to launch within the same timeframe.

Developed by Cepheid Games, V.E.C.T. stands for Virtual Equilibrioception Cancellation Trainer and is an on-rails arcade shooter that fully supports the Oculus Rift. The camera is constantly moving forwards when in play, though players can use the head-tracking technology found in the HMD to twist, allowing them to avoid certain obstacles as they blast other targets. The title tasks players with weaving their way through a complex set of levels.

Intriguingly, V.E.C.T. started life as a test project to observe motion sickness, though ended up growing into a full title when the developers discovered it didn’t cause such issues. “Instead of discovering what we thought would certainly cause motion sickness, we discovered a way to keep the player from getting motion sick even while moving them through a spinning tunnel inside of a ship,” the developer notes in its Greenlight campaign. “We discovered that head tilt is an intuitive way to control movement and prevent motion sickness at the same time.”

A demo of V.E.C.T. can currently be sampled from Cepheid Games’ official website in both VR and non-VR. The studio is planning to launch a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for the project in the near future, though no dates have yet been announced. Should all go according to plan, then Cepheid Games also hopes to bring V.E.C.T. to practically every VR HMD going, including HTC Vive, Project Morpheus, Gear VR, Google Cardboard and other smartphone-based HMDs.

VRFocus will continue to follow V.E.C.T.‘s progress, reporting back with the latest on the title.
