Turris Launches Kickstarter for New VR Seating with Built-in PC

Virtual reality (VR) seating solutions have already taken a shot at Kickstarter crowd-funding this year. Roto VR launched a campaign for a motorised swivel chair that was sadly destined to fail. Now Turris, a new chair from the team at Praevidi, has launched its own campaign, looking to raise $50,000 USD by 1st July 2014. The chair offers a hands-free approach to VR by uniquely housing a DIY PC inside of itself.

Resembling a stool instead of a swivel chair, Turris allows players to manually rotate on the spot by controlling their movements with their legs. It also includes orientation and pivot movement sensors, resulting in a system that avoids tangling users in wires as they turn from side-to-side and allowing them to navigate within VR experiences using core body movements instead of more traditional controls. This frees up the player’s hands to either use motion controllers or other systems without the concern of movements.

“Discontinuities between what you see in VR and experience in the real world, including visual artifacts, body motion and head motion all contribute to “simulation sickness” in VR,” Praevidi notes on its Kickstarter campaign. “The Turris aligns core body movement and orientation in the real and virtual worlds diminishing these discontinuities. It also provides free movement through zero obstruction seating and tangle free use of a VR display. Movement is incredibly intuitive and hands free – everyone is able to learn and enjoy movement control with the Turris. Hands are free for motion control input with the Sixense STEM or upcoming Oculus RIFT and VIVE controllers.”

Praevidi notes that Turris is ready for use with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and, intriguingly, the Project Morpheus head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4. Those interested in the kit can currently pledge $475 to secure a kit for delivery in January 2016, though it’s currently only listed for shipping in the USA.
