The great thing about the Oculus VR Share platform is that it really does contain everything. In the last week we have seen board games, a nature documentary, intergalactic space battles and atmospheric horror pieces. Today’s piece falls under the historical recreation category with a virtual reality (VR) demo created as part of a project to digitally catalogue the RRS Discovery.
The ship, which is housed at the Dundee Heritage Trust visitor centre in Scotland, was the vessel that carried famed explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton to Antarctica on their first journey. Produced by Digital VR and Digital Surveys and commissioned by the Heritage Trust the demo contains a 3D model of the ship’s Ward Room, produced by laser survey and created in Unreal Engine 4. With realistic sounds of the ship at sea, complete with creaking timbers and the sound of the wind battering the ship you can examine the room in great detail.
Compatible with both the DK1 and DK2 Oculus Rift head-mounted displays (HMDs), the RRS Discovery Virtual Ward Room Demo is available now.
