The racing genre is one of the most promising for virtual reality (VR) videogames right now, removing many of the limitations that other experiences at present. Teams have taken this fact and run with it; a manner of different types of racing titles already support VR, from simulations such as Project Cars to manic multiplayer experiences like Toybox Turbos. This month has seen the launch of a Steam Greenlight campaign for another new VR racing title that explores a new direction for the technology. That title is RC Simulation.
Developed by Devotid Media, which itself consists of a veteran RC racer with 25+ years of experience, RC Simulation aims to bring modern day RC racing to PC and the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). Played from a third-person perspective, racers will steer their vehicles through six different off road tracks, featuring both indoors and outdoors experiences. Tracks have eight different views to choose from. Players will be able to make real-time adjustments to their vehicles on a pit table and can select one of 15 ‘Legend Series’ painted lexan bodies.
A demo version of RC Simulation is currently available from an official website, allowing players to get a feel for vehicles’ handling and giving them the chance to walk through each course, though not race on them. The full version is actually already available on the site, though Devotid Media obviously hopes to pass its Steam Greenlight campaign and have the title sold on Valve’s full digital store in the future. It’s not clear just when the title might launch on Steam should the campaign prove successful.
VRFocus will continue to follow RC Simulation closely, reporting back with any further updates on the project.
