Throughout the past few weeks VRFocus has been reporting on the ongoing Mobile VR Jam, seeking the best virtual reality (VR) content for the Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD). Organiser Oculus VR is offering over $1 million USD in cash prizes to be spread out across winners in both Videogames and Apps tracks, both of which will be judged by a panel of experts including Palmer Luckey and John Carmack. A community voting option is also set to feature in the contest, with Oculus VR recently detailing when it will take place and how it will work.
As Oculus VR’s Erisana explained in the most recent Reddit Q&A for the Mobile VR Jam, community voting is likely to start up next week and run for roughly two weeks after. “Community voting will happen on the ChallengePost submission gallery (http://vrjam.challengepost.com/submissions) starting around 5/12 (or once we finish modding M4) and running until 5/26,” Erisana wrote.
“You will need a ChallengePost account, and you can give up to one vote per submission. The submission with the most total votes wins the Community’s choice prize (one per track).”
Two community prizes are on offer, one for each track of the Jam. Both will award winners with $10,000 cash, essentially making them equal to earning a Bronze award in either track. For Videogames, Platinum winners will get $200,000 while Gold and Silver will earn $100,000 and $50,000 respectively. In the Apps category, Platinum is worth $100,000 while Gold and Silver earn $50,000 and $30,000 respectively. As Erisana alluded to, the fourth and final milestone, in which finished entries must be submitted, will take place on 11th May 2015. Full winners are expected to be announced in June.
VRFocus will continue to follow the Mobile VR Jam closely, reporting back with any further updates on it.
