Earlier in the month VRFocus reported on the announcement of a new virtual reality (VR) massively multiplayer online (MMO) experience in Voxelnauts from Retro Ronin, formerly known as MEK Entertainment. At the time of the reveal the developer stated it would be launching a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign to raise money for the title’s production. That campaign has now launched, seeking $200,000 USD by 20th June 2015 in order to bring the title to the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) on PC, Mac and Linux.
Inspired by works such as Ready Player One, Voxelnauts is described its developer as an ‘MMO Sandbox RPG’ that grants players the freedom to do whatever they please. Players will start out on a planet known as Oasis, where they will learn to build and explore ancient ruins. From here, players can move to new planets and areas that have either been created by Retro Ronin itself or other developers. New environments will hold new activities while players can even start work on creating their very own planets.
Those interested in Voxelnauts can currently pledge $20 USD to secure a digital copy of the title. This is an early bird offer limited to 512 slots, which will raise to $25 when full. Backer rewards continue all the way up to $10,000, where backers will get the chance to meet the team among other rewards. Retro Ronin also has its first Kickstarter stretch goal in place, hoping to raise $400,000 for the creation of a new planet named Hyperion. Should the campaign prove successful then the team hopes to deliver the title in November 2016.
VRFocus will continue to follow Voxelnauts closely, reporting back with any further updates on the title’s progress.
