Google Releases Instructions to Build New Cardboard HMD

It’s been a big week for Google and its work in virtual reality (VR). The company has announced several new initiatives that utilise its Google Cardboard mobile head-mounted display (HMD) such as Google Expeditions and Google Jump. It’s also created a brand new version of its device that supports phones up to 6 inches in size. The new kit will even accommodate the iPhone 6, as support for Apple’s iOS operating system (OS) has now been added. Now the company has released its assembly instructions for those looking to build the new version of Google Cardboard.

New Google Cardboard

Google’s official website for Cardboard has been updated with new instructions for users to download. The file contains helpful additions such as a templates for laser cutting and more. Another download also gives instructions for manufacturers looking to mass produce the new device. The website also holds a list of materials that people will need to gather in order to assemble the kit, including dimensions for the cardboard itself and more.

It would appear that VR is playing a big part in Google’s future right now. The company has confirmed that over one million HMDs have now been created, with third-party manufacturers being officially recognised.

VRFocus will continue to follow Google’s work with Cardboard, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
