The new model of the Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD), designed for use with the recently launched Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones, became available to pre-order via US retailers last month. As of today is now available to order directly from Samsung.
Still labelled as an ‘Innovator Edition’, the Samsung Gear VR for S6 offers the same experience as it’s Galaxy Note 4 cousin, though it has recently been revealed that some apps may launch for this newer model first due to ‘performance issues’. Just as with the original model, the Gear VR for S6 includes integrated touchpad and tracking sensors though some apps may require the use of an Android bluetooth controller, which is currently not available as part of a bundle. However, those who purchase the Gear VR for S6 can opt to add an Android bluetooth controller to their package and by using the coupon code ‘STAVRS6’ will receive $30 USD off the total package price.
The Gear VR for S6 has a US release date set for 8th May 2015, and though the Samsung website suggests that you can purchase the device now the order processing states that any orders placed are a ‘back order’ with no confirmed shipping date. It would be wise to assume that orders placed directly with Samsung will ship for the same date though no confirmation of this is available at present. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on the Gear VR for S6.
