Fashion Giant Dior Creates VR HMD

The spread of modern virtual reality (VR) has moved so far in the past year that it’s no longer surprising when a new head-mounted display (HMD) is announced. However, the latest manufacturer to reveal their work is not a start-up company nor an existing technology enterprise, but rather a fashion design house.

Christian Dior S.A. (Dior), have revealed that they are taking the bold step into the world of VR. Commonly known as a designer of retail leather goods, fashion accessories, footwear, jewellery, timepieces, fragrance, make-up and skincare products while also maintaining its tradition as a creator of recognised haute-couture, Dior has revealed their own VR HMD, known as Dior Eyes.

“We decided to create a genuinely thrilling experience that would give Dior clients the physical sensation of living the Dior show backstage,” reads the Digital Labs website, the technology partner for Dior Eyes. “We knew that people are very intrigued by what’s happening behind the curtains, so we decided that we wanted to give them the opportunity to see it all, something that would truly give a glimpse into the backstage.”

Billed as ‘a tailor made virtual reality headset’, Dior Eyes has been designed with the explicit intention of immersing the user inside ‘the Dior backstage’. Using 3D audio and video, Dior Eyes will be available for consumer use in Dior’s selected points of sales worldwide.

“With its creative audacity and conquering spirit, Dior widens the gap in the digital innovation field by creating its own virtual reality headset called “Dior Eyes”, the world’s first combination of VR imagery technologies and sound recording in 360°,” reads the description of the HMD.

No release date has yet been announced for Dior Eyes, though it’s likely that the product will begin slowly emerging as a point of sale experience at retailers in the near future. More details about the design and manufacturing of Dior Eyes can be found at Digital Labs’ official website and VRFocus will keep you updated with any further HMDs entering the burgeoning marketplace.
