This week has seen the virtual reality (VR) branch of DreamWorks Animation finally launch DreamWorks VR. This new app for the Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD) offers a number of interactive experiences based on some of the company’s popular IP. It’s available to download for free right now and will see new experiences added to it over time. But that’s not all the company has announced this week; it has also launched a mailing list for developers that might be interested in working with the company in the future.
The mailing list was announced by DreamWorks Animation’s Head of DreamLabs, Brad Herman. Speaking at the 2015 Silicon Valley Virtual Reality (SVVR) Conference and Expo, Herman revealed that those interested in the company can currently heard to an official website to enter their email address.
“There’s no reason to not make VR content and not make it right now and start learning and experimenting,” Herman explained. “The barriers have all really fallen. I really don’t think that we should look at each other as competition, we should look at each other as collaborators building and exploring a new medium that needs an ecosystem of content to survive and to thrive. And we look forward to working with all of you to help do that.
“So up at www.dreamworksvr.com right now we actually have a sign up where, if you’re interested in our tools, if you’re interested in working with us, interested in finding out more about what we’re doing in VR, go to dreamworksvr.com and let us know.”
It’s not clear just how VR enthusiasts might be able to get involved with the company at this point in time, though hopefully this will be revealed soon. VRFocus will continue to follow DreamWorks Animation’s work in VR, reporting back with the latest updates from the company.
