Virtual reality (VR) fans look forward to the day that developers with AAA budgets are working with the technology to make truly immersive experiences. That kind of title actually already exists in the here and now with Frontier Development’s Elite: Dangerous. Launched on PC back in 2014 with full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), this gorgeous, engrossing space simulation experience is showing larger VR developers how support should be handled.
Frontier Developments has been busy of late, preparing its third major update to the title along with the launch of its Mac edition. VRFocus recently spoke to studio founder David Braben about Elite: Dangerous‘ VR support and where it could go in the future. In the interview below, Braben talks about focusing on VR from the start, before many other developers even considered it. He also mentions the chances of seeing the device on other HMDs as they’re released towards the end of this year and leading into next.
VRFocus will continue to follow Elite: Dangerous closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
