Virtual reality (VR) got some high-profile coverage last week as a new experience based around Marvel’s popular Avengers franchise was revealed for Samsung’s Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD). At the time is was suggested that the experience, named Battle for Avengers Tower, would be coming to the latest version of the Gear VR, which supports Samsung’s Galaxy S6 flagship smartphone and its curved spin-off, the S6 edge. As it turns out, the title will be a launch experience for the kit when it’s made available later this month.
New Gear VR for S6 owners should find Battle for Avengers Tower on Gear VR’s Oculus Store as soon as they load up the kit, which is to be released online on 8th May. Oculus VR itself recently stated that the new version of the HMD won’t quite see release parity with the original version, which launched last year with support for the Galaxy Note 4 phone, due to ‘performance related issues’ with the latter. As such, some content will arrive on the new Gear VR first before heading to the older kit a little later on.
Battle for Avengers Tower is a 360 degree experience designed to promote the super team’s latest film outing, Avengers: Age of Ultron. Set in the titular tower in New York, the short film follows a battle between key Avengers members including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk and the villainous Ultron, who can be seen with the same sceptre seen in the first film, and his army of robots. The piece is the latest in a line of promotional VR experiences developed by the VR arm of effects studio Framestore.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all Gear VR experiences, reporting back with the latest on them.
