Virtual reality (VR) fans may well have heard of VR Karts over the past few months. UK-based indie developer Viewpoint Games launched a demo for this VR videogame earlier in 2015 with full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). VRFocus itself previewed the title, finding promise in its Mario Kart-esque mechanics and visuals. Those that enjoyed the free sample will be happy to learn that VR Karts has today launched in pre-release form via Steam’s Early Access system.
VR Karts can currently be purchased for £9.99 GBP. The Early Access version of the title is single-player only, featuring four tracks based in one environment. Players also have access to basic kart customisation in this first release. Viewpoint games intends to keep adding to the Early Access edition of the title periodically. The full version is set to feature much more in the way of customisation, tracks and environments as well as improved visuals and audio. More weapons and pickups will also be added, as will an online multiplayer feature.
Anyone that purchases the Early Access version of the title will be automatically upgraded to the full version once it has been launched. Viewpoint Games intends to release the full version of VR Karts at a higher price point in late 2015, making sure that it’s ready in time for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift. The developer hasn’t mentioned any chance of support for HTC and Valve’s Vive HMD, which has been confirmed for a holiday 2015 release.
VRFocus will continue to follow VR Karts closely, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
