Oculus Launches Mobile SDK 0.5.0

Virtual reality (VR) developers around the world are currently readying themselves for a new VR development jam hosted by Oculus Rift creator, Oculus VR. The jam tasks entrants with creating new experiences for the company’s smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD), Gear VR, made in partnership with Samsung. With the first submissions due on 13th April 2015, developers won’t be heading into the challenge unprepared, as Oculus VR has this week launched the latest version of its Mobile Software Development Kit (SDK), 0.5.0.

A number of tweaks have been made with this version of the update. Perhaps most important among these is compatibility for the Samsung Galaxy S6, the company’s latest flagship smartphone that will be getting its own version of Gear VR in the future. It’s not clear if this means that all currently-released experiences, which run with the original Galaxy Note 4 enlarged handset, will require an update to work on the Gear VR of S6. The new phone arrives on 10th April, although a specific date for the updated HMD hasn’t been confirmed.

Elsewhere, Oculus Mobile SDK 0.5.0 removes the Universal Menu from VrLib, which will allow developers to open the menu without requiring each app to upgrade to the latest SDK. Said menus is now integrated into the Oculus System Activities application and can be downloaded and updated alongside Oculus Home and Horizon. Furthermore, Mobile Unity Integration has been synced with the Oculus PC SDK 0.5.0.1 Beta. VrPlatform entitlement checking has also been disabled by default in Unity. Oculus VR recommends entrants to its Jam download this version of the SDK for the competition. A total of $1,000,000 USD is set to be split between winners of two categories; one for videogames and one for other applications.
