Last month Samsung announced the next entry in its flagship series of smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S6, complete with a curved version named S6 edge. At the same time the company also revealed a new edition of its virtual reality (VR) compatible head-mounted display (HMD), Gear VR, that works with the new handsets. But while the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge were swiftly given a 10th April 2015 release date, the company is yet to confirm when it will put the new Gear VR up for sale. As it turns out, fans could be looking at a launch next month.
As reported by Sammobile, Samsung has revealed that it is planning to launch pre-orders for Gear VR for S6 in Japan on 23rd April and even has new editions of the kit on display in their Galaxy Stores from today. Following that, shipping of the new device will commence in early May. Samsung remains quiet on international launch dates, though it could be that other territories will see the kit around the same time. The original Gear VR launched in the USA first in late 2014 and rolled out to other territories within the first few months of 2015.
Few updates are expected for Gear VR for S6. The original Gear VR supported the enlarged Galaxy Note 4, thus the new version will be smaller to accommodate the regular-sized phones. Samsung and partner Oculus VR have confirmed that the next edition of the HMD past this one will be a ‘full consumer‘ device. A date for its reveal is yet to be announced although Oculus VR’s John Carmack has stated it will be included in Samsung’s next product release cycle. Traditionally speaking, that cycle takes place in September around IFA in Berlin, Germany.
VRFocus will continue to follow Gear VR closely, reporting back with any further updates on the device.
