Those that have followed indie developer Flying Mullosk’s work on upcoming virtual reality (VR) compatible horror videogame, Nevermind, will know that the title has had a long journey so far. Having failed a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign in early 2014, the developer returned later in the year with a much more successful attempt, raising $76,525 USD. The success meant that the title, which uses biofeedback to influence gameplay, could release with support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). This week sees an Early Access version of Nevermind launch on PC.
Nevermind is now available in pre-release form on Steam for £18.99 GBP. VR fans should note that this initial release doesn’t include VR support just yet, though it will arrive for the full version. Players can expect two levels, each containing roughly an hour of gameplay, as well as the ‘Neurostalgia Institue’ in this first release. The developer hopes to keep the title in an Early Access state for around six to eight months, targeting an October 2015 release date for the full version of the experience.
Flying Mullosk designed Nevermind as a first-person horror experience that aims to help players control issues with anxiety. Players can utilise Intel’s RealSense camera or strap on heart rate sensors such as Wild Divine IomPE, Garmin Heart Rate Chest Strap, and Mio LINK as well as any bluetooth-enabled heart-rate tracking device. These devices will measure the user’s heart-rate, adapting the Nevermind experience on the fly. If a user’s heart is beating fast, the title will become more challenging, requiring them to calm down in order to progress.
Intel’s RealSense camera also boasts unique functions with Nevermind, including gesture detection and facial recognition. An Xbox One version of the title is also planned, utilising the console’s Kinect motion-sensing camera. VRFocus will continue to follow Nevermind closely, reporting back with any updates on the videogame’s progress.
