A lot of exciting announcements for the Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) were made over the course of the Game Developers Conference (GDC) last week. But while a new version of the device is on the way to support the new Samsung Galaxy S6 handset and a ‘full consumer’ version has been teased, new content continues to arrive for the original kit this week. Three new VR experiences have hit the Oculus VR Store, though each is a free title rather than an addition to the handful of premium videogames currently available in the US.
VRFocus has already reported on the release of Kite & Lightning’s Insurgent: Shatter Reality on Gear VR but there are two other experiences joining it this week. The first is VRSE, which is presumably a port of the pre-existing iOS and Android VR app that offers its own range of video content. Videos are available for a premium in the older versions of the app, though it’s not clear if this is the case in the new one given that Oculus VR is yet to enable in-app purchases for Gear VR content.
The other release is Element Engine from Seismic Games. As the developer explains on its official website: “The Element Engine is Seismic’s state of the art demo on the new Samsung Gear VR from Oculus. Our Element Engine is the foundation for our new action shooter games on mobile and VR. Featuring amazing visuals, lightning fast performance, and a unique movement and control system, the Element Engine demo gives a taste of what the future will hold for action games in Virtual Reality.” The team is yet to reveal the aforementioned videogames.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all content for Gear VR, reporting back with the latest updates.
