Updated: Viral Update Coming to Gear VR Soon, Players to Get Full Title for Free

One of the first demos to launch on the Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) when it was released in late 2014 was Viral Lite. This is a small sample of indie developer Fierce Kaiju’s Viral, a promising new release for the platform. Fierce Kaiju has today confirmed to VRFocus that it has submitted a brand new version of Viral Lite to Oculus VR to run with Gear VR.

This new edition of the demo will include two new stages for players to tackle, one of which features the first boss encounter with an enemy known as ‘Odin’. Global leaderboards have also been added. Additionally, the developer has announced that those that download Viral Lite V1.4 before the full title is released will get that full version for free. A date for the final release is yet to be announced, although the developer has hinted that it’s close in the past.

In Viral players are cast as Ragnorok, an anti-virus system that works to eliminate the threat of infection in computer systems. Players are pitted against viruses within a system known as E.V.E. (Emotional Virtual Engine). The title aims to use a simple, intuitive control scheme paired with physics-based gameplay as players fight increasingly challenging manifestations of the virus. They can also expect powerups to aid them as well as help from E.V.E. itself.

Viral‘s team is comprised of developers with experience on series like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty. Recently Oculus VR launched a preview version of the commerce version of Gear VR’s Oculus VR Store from which premium content can be purchased in the US. An international rollout is expect in the near future. VRFocus will continue to follow the title closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.

UPDATE: This article originally stated that Viral would be coming to the Oculus Rift HMD as well. This was a misunderstanding on VRFocus’ part and has been edited out. VRFocus apologies for the confusion.
