Valve Programmer Talks Possible Half-Life 3 For HTC Vive

Recently people have been speculating about if Half Life 3 is coming to HTC’s new head-mounted display (HMD) the HTC Vive. After viewing the HTC Vive’ demo at this year Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2015, Kotaku chased up Valve on the possibility of seeing Half Life come to virtual reality (VR).

When the website proposed the question of whether Half Life was coming to the new HMD, Valve had an answer for it and gave Kotaku an interview, Jeff Barnett, a programmer for Valve stated: “We’ve said, ‘Let’s take some existing art and see how it fits. So yeah, we’ll grab some headcrabs, we’ll grab the machine guns from Half-Life, the rocket launcher—all those different fun things—and see how they play in VR. But right now, it’s a tool for exploring the different kind of game designs we want to do.”

The programmer was then probed about the possibility of there being a VR Half Life 3. He continued: “”We’re not saying, ‘no,’, “but we don’t know what the right thing is. Our most precious resource is time, and we don’t have enough time for people to do everything. Would we like to make all of our franchises in VR? Absolutely. But we don’t have enough time or people. So we have to figure out what’s the best fit, what plays to the strengths of VR.”

Next the interview moved on to questioning him about the VR Portal demo, which has been shown in private recently at GDC: “The modular things, these concepts of containment and giving you rules you have to follow in Portal—all of those things fit the type of demo we wanted to make.”

To round things up, the programmer detailed that at the moment, developers are researching a very broad spectrum of ideas in order to see what works. VRFocus will keep you updated on the latest from GDC.
