Shuhei Yoshida: PS4 Designed for 120fps Output With Project Morpheus

With the new generation of videogame consoles now over a year old the industry finds itself in a constant debate of technical standards. Many fans hope to play their titles in 60 frames per second (fps) on the PlayStation 4. As virtual reality (VR) companies will claim, though, 60fps isn’t quite enough to deliver convincing VR, which could cause an issue for the system’s Project Morpheus head-mounted display (HMD). However, according to Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) itself, PlayStation 4 was in fact designed for 120fps output for Project Morpheus.

SCE Head of World Wide Studios Shuhei Yoshida stated as much during a Project Morpheus presentation at the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) yesterday. Yoshida explained that the company felt that 120fps was ‘ideal’ for VR and that the PlayStation 4 was designed to have 120fps output. He then clarified that actual videogames could run at 60fps but then render at 120fps for Project Morpheus using what he described as ‘reprojection’ in software libraries.

A new prototype for Project Morpheus was also showcased at yesterday’s event. The kit boasts a new OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, thus the device itself is ready to deliver these demanding experiences. One of a handful of new experiences for the kit revealed at the event is said to run at 120fps, although details on this demo have not yet been revealed. The prototype was marked as ‘near final’, with the consumer version of the kit listed for release in the first half of 2016. SCE will be talking more about Project Morpheus and compatible videogames at E3 2015 this year on 16th – 18th June, with a push also expected at other events.
