Jaunt Teams with North Face to Produce Outdoor VR Experiences [UPDATED]

Cinematic virtual reality (VR) company Jaunt is already no stranger to high-profile partnerships. Whether it’s filming the premier of Guardians of the Galaxy, shooting onset of The Hobbit or recording a live concert with Jack White, the company has already worked with a range of brands in producing unique VR video content. Today sees Jaunt add outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear company The North Face to that list. The pair has announced two new VR experiences that will be coming to select retail stores and this weekend’s South By Southwest (SXSW) festival.

The two experiences will transport users to the picturesque Yosemite National Park in California and Moab, Utah using the Google Cardboard smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD). They follow two of The North Face’s global athletes team, including Cedar Wright and Sam Elias. Viewers will be able to watch the athletes prepare for rock climbing and then look on as they ascend. The content was created with the help of Camp4 Collective, a group of athletes and filmmakers that assisted the crew.

“Working with The North Face to capture the remarkable beauty of our national parks has been one of our favorite and most powerful projects to date,” said Jens Christensen, CEO of Jaunt. “We are creating an entirely new medium for entertainment and the content we’ve captured in Yosemite and Moab are perfect examples of just how transformative cinematic virtual reality can be.”

A sneak peek of the content can be found at the Google Fiber Space at 201 Colorado Street during this weekend’s SXSW in Austin, Texas. The North Face VR experience will also debut in retail outlets in New York, San Francisco and Chicago from 16th March and see a public release later on in the year. UPDATE: Following the publication of this article Jaunt has contacted VRFocus to clarify the details of the public availability of these experiences. Opposed to arriving in retail outlets throughout New York, San Francisco and Chicago from 16th March as stated above, they will be available The North Face retail locations this month, starting in Chicago and then rolling out to New York and San Francisco. Furthermore, the downloadable version will arrive on 16th March 2015 via jauntvr.com/content. VRFocus apologises for the error.
