It’s rare to get the chance to talk to a virtual reality (VR) developer with its first release already behind it. True, Samsung has allowed consumers to pick up a Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) since late 2014, but many teams are still waiting on the consumer versions Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or Project Morpheus to launch a premium product. UK-based indie studio Coatsink Software has bucked that trend with the release of first-person puzzle title Esper on Samsung’s device.
VRFocus recently spoke to Coatsink Software Creative Director Tom Beardsmore about the project. In the interview below, Beardsmore talks about the inspirations for Esper, especially concerning the Portal-esque narration. There’s also talk of the team’s possible future in VR from porting Esper to other HMDs.
VRFocus will continue to follow Coatsink Software’s work in VR, reporting back with any further updates from the developer.
