Gaijin Entertainment continues show commitment to its popular free-to-play virtual reality (VR) compatible videogame, War Thunder. The developer has released a number of significant patches for the World War Two-era massively multiplayer online (MMO) experience over the past few months. Today it is releasing its latest upgrade in Update 1.47, titled ‘Big Guns’, for all versions of the title. War Thunder features full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) on PC, Mac and Linux.
The Big Guns update brings with it some of the biggest vehicles that War Thunder has yet seen. Namely the B29 Superfortress and Pz.Kpfw.VIII Maus are now available. The former is a bomber that boasts a larger wingspan than some modern airliners while the latter is a tank that weighs in at 188 tons. These are just two of the 14 new planes and tanks that are included in this update along with the 30 US tanks that have been rolling out from Beta testing over the past several weeks and months.
Crucially, Update 1.47 adds varied, deformable terrain. This means that tank units will now travel at different speeds depending on the ground they occupy. A unit will move faster on the road, for example, but start to slow down when they hit mud. Tanks will even leave their mark in the ground that they’ve torn through and start to cover themselves in the mud that they’re churning out. The developer reasons that this gives the title a more tactical edge as they debate which routes to use.
A number of other features have been added in the Big Guns update including in-game items that can be used in different ways. A full changelog for the title can be seen over on War Thunder’s official site. VRFocus will continue to follow the title closely, reporting back with any further updates on it.
