Fans of classic first-person role-playing (RPG) videogame Ultima Underwolrd: The Stygian Abyss had their wishes come true today. That’s because indie developer OtherSide Entertainment has passed its Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for a follow-up to the series known as Underworld Ascendant. The title passed a $600,000 USD goal in order to bring it to PC, Mac and Linux. As if that weren’t enough, OtherSide Entertainment has also teased support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for Underworld Ascendant.
“Many of you have been asking about VR for Underworld Ascendant,” the developer recently wrote in a Kickstarter update. “On our forum survey, over 40% say they have extremely strong or strong interest in this technology. That’s higher than we’d anticipated, especially considering the limited availability of VR these days. VR would be a natural fit for Underworld Ascendant for sure, as the game’s experience is rooted in deep immersion.
“In fact, we have been working with an Oculus Rift developer kit. We’ve only spent a day so far experimenting with the kit on Underworld Ascendant, but already the prototype is running with full Oculus Rift support.” The developer went on to touch upon some of the benefits and disadvantages of adapting the title to VR without explicitly stating that VR support will definitely happen.
Details on Underworld Ascendant are thin at this early stage, though the developer plans to deliver an experience that’s faithful to the series with a richly detailed underworld, dynamic factions that react to player choices and different classes to choose from including Fighter, Thief or Mage. Further stretch goals also hope to add co-op play and more to the experience. The campaign itself still has a week to go before wrapping up.
VRFocus will continue to follow Underworld Ascendant, reporting back with any further updates on the title’s VR support.
