Super Stardust Ultra is ‘Morpheus Ready’ Says Sony

Last week marked the release of an updated version of a beloved PlayStation title in Super Stardust Ultra from Resogun developer Housemarque. The arcade shooter made the jump from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 with five new planets and nine different game modes along with updated visuals and more. It appears that another feature may well be added to the title in the future; virtual reality (VR) support with Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4.

As Digital Foundry notes over on Eurogamer, Super Stardust Ultra is labelled as ‘Morpheus Ready’ in a reviewer’s factsheet. When asked about this potential support, SCE told the outlet that “Housemarque are fortunate enough to have had access to Morpheus development kits and have been experimenting with the technology using their latest title, Super Stardust Ultra.”

“At this time, the technical tests are ongoing and it is too early to say whether Super Stardust Ultra will become Morpheus compatible at some stage, or whether the team will apply the technical knowledge to future titles.”

Super Stardust Ultra was praised for its technical performance in reviews last week, something that is essential to an immersive VR experience. In terms of the ‘future titles’ that SCE mentions, the company announced top-down shooter Alienation at Gamescom 2014; could this be another VR compatible videogame for PlayStation 4?

Project Morpheus was first revealed the the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC) and is set to make a return at this year’s show, which runs from 2nd – 6th March 2015. The company even has a Project Morpheus session listed for 4th March in which it promises to share updates about the device. Could there possibly be more news on these titles are the event? VRFocus will continue to follow the device closely, reporting back with any further updates on it.
