Sony Holding Project Morpheus Event at GDC 2015

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has already confirmed that it will be bringing its Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) to the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) from 2nd – 6th March. The company will be hosting a number of sessions based on VR, the most promising of which is ‘Beyond Immersion – Project Morpheus and PlayStation‘, set to take place on 4th March. However SCE has now announced an entire event dedicated to the device that will run on 3rd March.

Polygon has confirmed that SCE will be holding a near four-hour event looking at the device. According to the site, attendees will be given hands-on demos of Project Morpheus experiences and learn about the company’s plans for the future of the kit. Few other details about the event have been revealed at this point in time. That said, the aforementioned session taking place the following day will discuss updates to Project Morpheus, so it’s possible that a new version of the kit will be revealed.

Project Morpheus was first revealed at GDC 2014, with little information about the device being issued in the year that followed. With that in mind, there are high hopes for some big announcements at this year’s show. SCE is yet to even confirm that the device will be turned into a consumer product in the future, often stating that it is in the experimental stages. Currently the device boasts positional tracking and an LCD 1080p display, bringing it in line with the second development kit (DK2) for the Oculus Rift.

Elsewhere, Oculus VR will also be showcasing ‘the latest prototypes‘ of both its Oculus Rift and Gear VR HMDs at this year’s show. A wide array of VR-related panels, sessions and talks are also set to take place.

VRFocus will be at GDC to deliver all of the latest updates on the technology.
