With Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) now out in a number of different countries, fans can start looking forward to what’s next for the device. While partner Oculus VR will continue to keep the kit fuelled with content for the weeks and months to come, it may be that the next big announcements for Gear VR arrive in early March 2015. Samsung has just announced its next Unpacked event for 1st March, positioning it just ahead of two major events taking place in the following week.
This next event takes place in Barcelona, Spain just before Mobile World Congress (MWC) gets underway in on 2nd – 5th March. Also running from 2nd – 6th March is the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California, USA. A teaser image for the show can be seen below. Rumours have pointed towards Samsung preparing to reveal the next entry in its flagship smartphone series, the Galaxy S6 in March. Could this be where the company unveils the kit? If so, what might it mean for Gear VR? VRFocus has previously learned that an S6 compatible version of the kit is incoming, although its reveal might not be until April 2015.
Oculus VR has confirmed that it will be bringing the ‘latest prototypes’ of Gear VR to GDC 2014, though hasn’t clarified if this means the already-launched consumer version. The new model of Gear VR isn’t intended to be the next iteration of the device but simply a new version that supports its flagship series as opposed to the enlarged Galaxy Note 4 kit that current Gear VR units use. To that end, the new device likely wouldn’t include any new functionality such as positional tracking, with is said to be in the works for future versions.
Gear VR launched in the UK last week through Samsung’s online retail store. It is also expected to his physical outlets later this week. VRFocus will continue to follow the kit closely, reporting on any further updates.
