Last week saw the rerelease of one of the most beloved adventure videogames of all time in Grim Fandango Remastered. The celebrated 1998 LucasArts project arrived on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and PC with updated visuals and more, giving many players their first chance to experience it. Now one fan has released a unique new experience that aims to bring players into the world of Grim Fandango by letting them explore the office of protagonist, Manuel ‘Manny’ Calavera, in virtual reality (VR) with the Oculus Rift head-mounted display.
This first person experience is currently free to download from the official Oculus VR forums and is created by a member named kavehth. The experience features a visually impressive rendition of Manny’s travel agent office. As fans of the title will know, Grim Fandango is set in the land of the dead with many of its characters appearing a skeletons. The surreal experience is heavily inspired by film noir, explaining Manny’s dim office space. Some screenshots of the new experience can be seen below.
VR is no stranger to fan adaptions such as these. Over the past few years fans of the technology have made virtual recreations of environments from popular films, shows and videogames. Everything from the likes of Star Wars and Seinfeld to The Legend of Zelda and My Neighbour Totoro has been to the Oculus Rift, allowing fans to get close to these experiences by immersing themselves in their environments. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates.
