Elite: Dangerous 1.1 Beta Dated, Adds Star System Discoverer Credits

Last month VRFocus reported on news that popular virtual reality (VR) compatible space simulation title Elite: Dangerous would be launching its first major update in February 2015. Creator Frontier Developments revealed that it would first be releasing a Beta version of the update, titled 1.1, for those that tested the full title pre-launch last year. A full rollout will take place shortly after that. Now the release date for the Beta version has been revealed, and fans won’t have to wait long to get their hands on it.

Elite: Dangerous Beta update 1.1 will reach both Alpha and Beta backers on 3rd February. A number of new features, tweaks and fixes are expected to arrive within the update, with Frontier Developments detailing one major new addition last week. Once the update goes live, the first player to visit a star system for the first time will be credited for it. This means that a ‘Discovered By’ credit will appear on the galaxy map for all players once the first person has found the system.

“It’s another way to make a permanent mark on the Elite: Dangerous galaxy, and it’s not alone,” the developer notes in its most recent newsletter sent out to fans of the title. “One of the new Community Goals will task players with sourcing materials for the construction of a Federation or Imperial capital ship. Successful completion of the goal will mean a new, named vessel out among the stars, and the player who transports and donates the most material will have the honor of choosing its name – subject to approval of course.”

Elite: Dangerous features an enormous amount of star systems that players are free to explore. Many of these systems contain scientifically accurate replications of what is known to be there in real existence. The title launched in full on PC back in December 2014 with full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). A Mac version is also expected to hit this year. VRFocus will continue to follow Elite: Dangerous closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
