It’s not clear exactly what this week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, will hold for virtual reality (VR). Oculus VR has confirmed that it will be bringing the Crescent Bay prototype for its Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) to the show. Samsung, on the other hand, will be bringing the Gear VR smartphone-based HMD, which was released in the US in partnership with Oculus VR. Aside from that, exactly what will be running on these HMDs is unclear, although VRFocus can confirm that Samsung will be showing at least some new apps for Gear VR.
On display at Samsung’s booth is what seems to be a new VR title for Gear VR that appears to be labelled ‘New Cycling Experience with Trek & Cycleops’. There’s also mention of a ‘New Avengers Experience with Marvel’. From the sounds of it this could well be the same Marvel VR experience that debuted with Gear VR back it September 2014. The piece provided users with just a glimpse of what it might be like to wear the Iron Man armour as seen in the comic books and movies. Given the nearing release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, this app could be due for release soon.
Hopefully there will be yet more new Gear VR experiences on display at the event this week, which runs from 6th – 9th January. Not only that, but some news on the kit’s launch outside of the US and the launch of a premium store are also highly anticipated. You can also expect to see third party hardware and software aimed at VR HMDs. All-in-all there should be plenty of VR news to read up on throughout the week.
VRFocus is at CES and will be reporting on all of the latest updates.
