Earlier in the week VRFocus reported on the launch of a concept demo for a new virtual reality (VR) compatible space flight simulation experience by the name of Eridanus Wars. At the time of the release indie developer StellarVR noted that it was planning to launch a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign to aid development of the experience. Now that campaign has launched, seeking some £6,000 GBP in order to launch Eridanus Wars on PC with full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).
Eridanus Wars aims to put players in huge, online co-op space battles. Players pilot craft around dramatic battlegrounds that often include gigantic flagships and distant planets that dwarf the action. The story is set in the distant future in which humanity has formed The Human Federation. Running low on resources to keep its empire running, the federation expands into the Eridanus star system to secure supplies. There, they are met with resistance from the native Eridans. Players can choose from either side in the wars.
From there, players fight to control individual sectors of the Eridan star cluster, securing supply facilities and more. Interestingly the title’s co-op option doesn’t refer to two players in separate ships, rather both sitting in the same craft, with one piloting and using the main weapons while another operates a turret. Successful battles will allow players to upgrade their ships and weapons. As the developer explains, ‘Eridanus Wars is designed to be quick, fun and have almost instant action.’
Eridanus Wars‘ Kickstarter campaign is due to close on 7th March 2015. Those that are interested in the title can currently pledge just £8 to get access to the online beta when it launches in late 2015. Other backer tiers include Alpha access and more. The title is also running a Steam Greenlight campaign. VRFocus will continue to follow Eridanus Wars, reporting back with any further updates on the title.
