There are a number of space flight simulation experiences coming to virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays. But, given that the genre manages to bypass many of the development issues with current VR hardware, there’s always room for more. And more comes this week as indie developer StellarVR launches a concept demo for Eridanus Wars onto the official Oculus VR Share Beta for free with full support for the Oculus Rift.
Eridanus Wars is a first-person flight experience that sees players pilot a craft around huge environments with enormous capital ships and planets serving as immersive backdrops. In this demo players must defend their station from an attack, with a Destroyer ship located off in the distance.
The story will see players fighting for the survival of the ‘Human Federation’. “The Human Federation has run low on resources for its ever expanding empire and needs to urgently expand into new territory or face dwindling resources, famine and death,” the title’s official description reveals. “Their only hope is to expand into the Eridanus star system and capture the resources within, but the native Eridans won’t give them up without a fight.
“Our aim is to build this game into an online persistent universe and have 40-60 players batting for control of each sector with Destroyers and Space Stations fully enabled and able to be captured/destroyed. Also player’s ships are multi-seat, so a buddy can join you in the cockpit and man the secondary weapon system.”
The developers are hoping to launch a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for Eridanus Wars in the next few weeks, although specific dates and goals are yet to be announced. The demo can currently be downloaded for free here. VRFocus will continue to follow the title, reporting back with any further updates.
