Previously VRFocus reported on virtual reality (VR) cinemas’s community meetup which featured 3 of the first animated VR films. One of the animated films, BUTTS: The VR Experience is now on Oculus VR Share. The film embraces themes of depression, loneliness despite having a humorous backdrop. It is supported by the second development kit (DK2) of Oculus Rift’s head-mounted display (HMD).
Originally it was a 2D animation short, but director Tyler Hurd adapted the it to be a VR experience. It was showcased at the VR Cinema meetup alongside two other animated shorts. The film tells the story of a blue man, who is happy in his strange way of bouncing around. While doing this he comes across a sad orange man. He is lonely and depressed however the blue man takes it upon himself to make him feel better. The film is intended is to teach people to remember what it feels like to be truly free by returning them to a place of innocence.
