Even without the release of a consumer head-mounted display (HMD), there are a good number of unique virtual reality (VR) experiences out there. Developers have been busy creating everything from immersive videogames to films that put audiences in the middle of the action. Recently France-based creative agency Backlight Studio launched one of the most unusual VR experiences yet in Birdy King Land. This surreal CGI adventure is currently free to download for use with the Oculus Rift PC HMD.
Birdy King Land is described by its creator as ‘half way between a rollercoaster and an animated movie’. The experience follows two creatures as they race across the vast, colourful island of Birdy King Land chasing a bird with a burger in its beak. The project started after Backlight Studio began to experiment with the first iteration of the Oculus Rift, the first development kit (DK1). It aims to pair the excitement of popular VR rollercoaster software with an engaging narrative and unique art direction.
The film should work with all versions of the Oculus Rift. Art direction comes from Adrien Cachinho while audio was created with the help of music and sound design company Mooders. The piece can currently be downloaded from the official Birdy King Land website. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all VR experiences, reporting back with any further updates on them.
