War Thunder Dev: Project Morpheus ‘the same incredible VR-experience as on PC’

Only a handful of videogame and virtual reality (VR) fans will have been able to get their hands on Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus head-mounted display (HMD) for the PlayStation 4 in 2014. Since being revealed in March, the device has only made a few appearances to the public, including Gamescom in Germany and Tokyo Game Show in Japan. You might be wondering just how the HMD stacks up to the Oculus Rift HMD on PC, then. According to War Thunder developer Gaijin Entertainment, it’s the same ‘incredible’ experience.

The developer said as much to VRFocus in an interview that will be published in full later in the week. “It’s in an even earlier development stage than Oculus Rift, so we can’t really go into details,” the studio explained. “In short, both devices have their pros and cons, but do more or less the same. In the end, it’s a good thing that PS4 users will be able to get the same incredible VR-experience as on PC – keep in mind War Thunder is the only game on PS4 that supports some models of the flightsticks for better immersion.”

Project Morpheus is comparable to the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2) in that both support positional tracking and 1080p displays, albeit Project Morpheus’ panel is an LCD one whereas the DK2’s is OLED, offering low-latency head-tracking. It’s not yet clear when the HMD might will launch. War Thunder is an online historic combat title that already features Oculus Rift support on PC and plans to add Project Morpheus support to its PlayStation 4 version later down the line. The title is currently preparing to launch its latest update, Steel Generals.
