This weekend sees Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) host its first ever PlayStation Experience community event in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The event, which runs on 6th and 7th December 2014, will allow attendees to get their hands on some of the biggest titles of 2015 as well as be the first to hear about new announcements. A number of sessions and panels will also take place during the show, including one panel dedicated to the company’s Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4.
As Gamespot reports, the panel, titled ‘Project Morpheus and VR as a New Era for Games’, will take place at 12:00 PST on 6th December. Panellists include SCE’s Head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida as well as representatives from SCE London Studio, the team that has produced both The Deep and Street Luge demos for the HMD, which have been shown alongside it at various events. Interestingly, the panel will also include a representative from Supermassive Games, the UK-based developer currently working on PlayStation 4 exclusive Until Dawn.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that Until Dawn itself is due for Project Morpheus support. At E3 this year SCE revealed Jurassic Encounter from the developer. This is a brief tech demo for the HMD and could be the extent of the studio’s involvement with Project Morpheus. Until Dawn itself was revealed years ago for PlayStation 3 and at Gamescom 2014 was reintroduced for PlayStation 4. Speculation before the show suggested that it might be a new Project Morpheus title, although this wasn’t mentioned during its reveal.
Project Morpheus itself was revealed at the 2014 Game Developers Conference. It uses a 1080p display and features full positional tracking, though is very much still in prototype stages. Little about the device has been revealed since; could this panel finally reveal more information? VRFocus will continue to follow the HMD, reporting back with any further updates.
