Fox Reveals VR Piece Wild – The Experience Starring Reese Witherspoon

Virtual reality (VR) is now one of the most popular ways to market upcoming movies with the likes of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Interstellar and The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies all using the technology to create short experiences. It looks like that trend is set to continue well into the New Year, with Fox Searchlight Pictures recently revealing a VR new experience based on Wild, the new biographical drama starring Reese Witherspoon. The piece, titled Wild – The Experience runs on the Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD).

Wild itself is based on the memoir of Cheryl Strayed, titled Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. It details Strayed’s thousand mile hike across the Pacific Crest Trail following a traumatic period in her life. In the movie and VR experience she is portrayed by Witherspoon. As The New York Times reports, Wild – The Experience places users in a 360 degree environment with the actress, who along with the viewer, starts to see visions of her mother, played by Laura Dern. Viewers then watches the two talk before the piece ends.

The experience is set to be on display at two events in January 2015. The first is the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada on 6th – 9th, the other being the Sundance Film Festival from 22nd January – 1st February in Park City, Utah. It’s not clear if Fox Searchlight Pictures owner 20th Century Fox will be releasing the experience on consumer Gear VR HMDs following these events. Interestingly, though, The New York Times story suggests that the company could release experiences such as this commercially in the future.

VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates.
