Earlier in the year it was revealed that God of War developer Sony Santa Monica had suffered a round of layoffs. Members of the team also revealed that the studio had cancelled a new IP under development at the studio. It was Jonathan Hawkins, former Lead Level Designer at the developer, the revealed the cancellation. This week Hawkins has revealed his own indie development studio, which is working on a new virtual reality (VR) videogame set to make its debut this weekend.
Hawkins has announced White Elk Studios, which is working on a brand new first-person exploration videogame named Eclipse. Little has been revealed about the title so far, although the developer has teased that players will find themselves in an ‘alien landscape’ that is on a ‘planetary scale’, suggesting that there will be a huge area to explore. It’s also mentioned that the title will feature puzzle solving. The first two, small screenshots of the experience can be seen in an image below. Said image also reveals that the title is being co-developed by Section Studios.
Specific head-mounted displays (HMD) for Eclipse were not announced, although will likely be revealed tomorrow, 13th December 2014 as the title has been confirmed to be appearing at the Virtual Reality Los Angeles (VRLA) Meetup. It will feature alongside other exhibitors such as Samsung and Epic Games. The event takes place from 13:00 to 19:00 PST at House of Moves, though tickets for entrance are already sold out.
That’s another VR videogame to be on the lookout for in 2015, then. VRFocus will continue to follow Eclipse, reporting back with any further updates on the title as they’re revealed.
