Yesterday VRFocus reported on rumours that AT&T was shipping Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for delivery today, 8th December 2014. The rumour came in the form of a receipt that showed one customer apparently ordering the device from an AT&T retail outlet located in Merrillville, Indiana, USA to be sent to his house. It’s starting to look more and more like the image was the real thing, as AT&T’s online store now lists Gear VR as ‘Due Today’.
As Twitter user Chuck Olsen has pointed out to VRFocus, AT&T’s online listing for Gear VR clearly states that the kit is expected to launch today, although notes that it is currently out of stock online. The site lists the kit at $199 USD, keeping in line with both the announced price and what was listed on yesterday’s receipt. It remains to be seen if the company will make good on these listings, as those that have ordered a Gear VR should start to see them arrive later today.
Last month Samsung announced that Gear VR was expected to launch in early December 2014. Despite the release window quickly passing by, neither the company nor partner Oculus VR has offered any official word on a specific release date. More recently an update for the Galaxy Note 4, the smartphone that runs with Gear VR, gave a peek into Gear VR’s software and what might be available for the device whenever it does launch.
When Gear VR does launch it will arrive as an Innovator’s Edition. While available to consumers, the device will still be thought of as a developer kit, designed for those creating content for Gear VR and early adopters eager to get their hands on consumer VR. It will also feature a free store, with premium products expected to arrive later down the line. VRFocus will continue to follow Gear VR closely, reporting back with any further updates on the device.
