12 Days of VR Gaming – Day 6: Ethereon

The holiday season is upon us and many of VRFocus‘ readers will be eager to spend much of their time travelling to worlds beyond their own daily grind. To that end, over the next 12 days VRFocus will be bringing some top picks of the virtual reality (VR) scene that you can download and play right now on either the Oculus Rift development kits or the Gear VR.

2014 has proved to be a harsh year for the Kickstarter crowd-funding platform. Countless hopeful videogames, many of them virtual reality (VR) compatible, have launched campaigns seeking the money to help make their dream projects come true. While there have been some big successes, it sadly feels like these campaigns fall short more often than not. The most recent example of this is Ethereon, a promising new VR puzzle videogame from indie team Innvervision Games.

Ethereon is a title that’s looking to go deeper with its VR support, not just in its underwater setting but also with puzzles that have actually been created with the technology in mind. Players explore a surreal aquatic world, overcoming logic-based challenges by utilising real-world physics. It’s an experience that’s just as much about existing in a world as solving it trials, with wildlife occasionally giving players rollercoaster rides through the stunning environments.

Ethereon combines puzzle-based interactions from the adventure game genre and cinematic elements from feature film to create a compelling and novel experience that is exclusive to VR,” the developer states. “In this latest Aquatic Realm teaser you will journey through an underwater civilization and embark on a short cinematic ride sequence where you will encounter a variety of unique sea creatures, providing a memorable experience inspired by Disney’s theme park attractions of yesteryear.”

Interested in seeing what Ethereon is all about for yourself? The developer has released a teaser demo that works with the Oculus Rift DK1 and DK2 on its Kickstarter page. It’s VRFocus‘ sixth entry in the 12 Days of VR Gaming series, keep checking back for the rest this holiday season!
