War Thunder Hits Linux

Linux users have reason to celebrate today as virtual reality (VR) compatible online combat title War Thunder has arrived on the operating system. As with the PC, Mac and PlayStation 4 versions of the title, it’s free to download on the new platform. It should also feature full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) as it does on PC and Mac. The title is only supported on 64-bit systems. It arrives as version 1.43, which was integrated recently.

War Thunder is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online (MMO) experience in which players pilot World War II-era planes and drive tanks around battlefields. Developer Gaijin Entertainment has stressed that the Linux version of the title has received ‘extensive testing’ and will work cross-platform with the other editions. This will mean the Linux version will also benefit from the upcoming 1.45 update titled Steel Generals, which adds even more vehicles among other features.

While War Thunder already supports the Oculus Rift, the PlayStation 4 version of the title is expected to receive support for the Project Morpheus HMD as well. The HMD is yet to receive any solid release information, although fans can expect this title to be among the line-up of compatible experiences when details are finally revealed. VRFocus will continue to follow War Thunder‘s progress, reporting back with any further updates on the title.
