When it comes to virtual reality (VR) flight simulation experiences, most have put us in the cockpit of state of the art jets, historic planes and space craft from the distant future. This week sees the launch of a demo for one of the first VR videogames to put players in control of a helicopter. That title is Combat Helicopter VR from Retro Invaders VR developer Ben Librojo, featuring full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).
This is an arcade-style action title in which players pilot a helicopter in first-person, squaring off against both grounded and airborne enemies. Players are armed with powerful machine guns that can freely aim at targets, while rockets can also be fired for extra damage. Levels take place across both land and sea, as players juggle fending off enemy helicopters as boats and tanks take aim. A panel in the vehicle’s cockpit will supply crucial information throughout the experience.
Combat Helicopter VR‘s demo can currently be downloaded on PC for free over on the official Oculus VR Share Beta, a portal for free VR experiences. It is also available over on the developer’s website along with his other works. The title is compatible with both the Oculus Rift’s first and second development kits (DK1 and DK2). It’s not yet clear when the full version might launch. VRFocus will continue to follow Combat Helicopter VR‘s progress, reporting back with any further updates.
