Preview: Titans of Space on Gear VR

Drash VR’s Titans of Space earned the team a great deal of respect when it made it’s debut on the original Oculus Rift development kit (aka DK1), cited as one of the most impressive uses of the hardware that avoided any sense of acceleration or interactivity in favour of a comfortable virtual reality (VR) experience. Bringing this to Gear VR – a device which at present doesn’t support positional tracking – was perhaps a natural evolution for the project, but it doesn’t feel any less impressive because of it.

A journey as much as it is a document, Titans of Space is a simple yet powerful taste of the potential of informative VR. Sitting upon a non-descript device which travels through space at what must be an incredible pace – yet appears to have the universe move around it rather than it through space – the user comes face-to-face with a select number of planets in our solar system. Beginning with Earth, the player is invited to absorb information on size, age, span, rotation and more. Surface details are offered at the start with the user given the option to dig deeper if they so wish.

The perspective used in Titans of Space is obviously intended to convey the sense of magnitude of the giant spheres you come into contact with. Viewed in first-person with a stationary avatar representing your body beyond your head, the scale of the planets is impressive. Earth can be seen in it’s entirety within your normal line of sight, Jupiter however demands that you angle your neck up and down, left and right in order to see it’s full edges.

The demonstration version of Titans of Space shown on Gear VR states that it is not yet in stereoscopic 3D, however the final release version will be. That said, it still manages to convey depth in a reliable fashion thanks to the ever-present curves of its subject matter. Its visuals may be basic, but they are intentionally so and the high quality of the smoothness of each planet’s curve is undoubtedly impressive.

Titans of Space has a lot more to be shown than this simple introduction, and much like WemoLabs’ The Blu VR demonstration it is clearly designed to act as a teaser. Hopes are high that Drash VR can maintain this level of quality throughout and push for a launch not too long after the Gear VR hardware itself.
