Virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts and developers have released a lot of VR tributes to some of their favourite movies and TV shows over the past year. Many of these have appeared on the official Oculus VR Share Beta, a software portal for sharing free experiences for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display. Another such experience has launched on the platform this week based off of Steven Spielberg’s 1977 classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The experience, simply named Close Encounters, has been created by an indie developer by the name of hexagon99 and takes inspiration from the iconic scene set in Devil’s Tower, Wyoming in which an alien mother ship lands. The demo is only two minutes in length but should prove to be a worthwhile experience for fans of the film. The developer has also released a second experience onto Oculus VR Share based on the Stage Harbor Lighthouse in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Both experiences are currently free to download and feature full support for the Oculus Rift’s first and second development kits (DK1 and DK2). Close Encounters is available on both PC and Mac while Stage Harbor Lighthouse can only be played on PC. It’s not clear if a Mac version could release for the latter or if both will see Linux compatible versions. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of the Oculus Rift, bringing you the latest.
