Electronics giant Samsung delivered the news that virtual reality (VR) fans had been waiting for earlier today as it confirmed that its Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD) would be launching in early December 2014. The company stated as much during its keynote conference at the 2014 Samsung Developer Conference (SDC), where it also encouraged enthusiasts to pre-register for alerts on pre-ordering the kit. As it turns out, pre-registration appears to be only open in the US for now.
Fans in the UK that currently click through to the microsite will be presented with a simple page on Gear VR that displays a range of information about the device. However, those in the US that access the site will be presented with a form to fill out information. At this time VRFocus can’t confirm that this is the case in every country and Samsung itself hasn’t been able to comment based on our attempts to find out more information on the SDC show floor.
What this means for the actual launch of Gear VR in other territories is also yet to be revealed. Does this release window apply strictly to the US or can other countries expect to get their hands on the kit before the year’s end? Hopefully clarification will arrive before SDC’s closure on 13th November. VRFocus will continue to try to find answers about the kit during the event, reporting back with any further updates on it.
