One of the many pleasant surprises to be unveiled at the reveal of Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) earlier this year was a new VR experience from DreamWorks. At the time this software simply acted as a virtual cinema to showcase a 3D trailer for the upcoming Penguins of Madagascar. As it turns out DreamWorks have bigger ambitions for the software, which is now titled DreamWorks VR.
Speaking at the ‘Virtually Flying With Dragons’ technical keynote at the 2014 Samsung Developer Conference, DreamWorks Animations’ Warren Mayoss revealed that the company intends to launch DreamWorks VR in this final quarter of 2014. Of course, Gear VR itself is launching in the US in early December 2014, meaning fans can expect the app to arrive close to if not at the launch of the device itself.
Mayoss insisted that, over time, DreamWorks VR would have more experiences added to it, meaning it won’t simply be the trailer-viewer that it has appeared as so far. Details on additional experiences were not announced at this point in time. VRFocus will continue to follow DreamWorks’ progress in VR, reporting back with any further updates on the company.
